As a dietetics-intent, this is a topic that is quite important to me! Nutrition!
In March 1973, National Nutrition Week was introduced by the American Dietetic Association (now known as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics). Through multiple platforms, they promoted nutrition education and the profession of dietetics. National Nutrition Week became widely recognized more and more each year. Due to the holiday’s increasing popularity, the holiday became a month-long celebration in 1980.
National Nutrition Month allows us to honor registered dietitians nutritionists (RDNs) and registered nutrition and dietetic technicians (NDRTs) around the country who help us achieve optimal health through the power of nutrition. When we take action and make healthful decisions as suggested by these professionals, we are honoring and celebrating our awesome RDNs and NDTRs.
Although March is National Nutrition Month. We want to share other ways that you can celebrate the importance of nutrition all year long. Here are some ideas!
- Try a new fruit or vegetable. You may learn you like Brussels sprouts more than you thought you would! Try to spice things up with this new fruit or vegetable and use it in a fun, yet appetizing, recipe!
- Take some time off from eating out. Use the money you would’ve used to pay for those meals by contributing to charitable causes or for cooking a nutritious meal!
- Buy a cool, new water bottle. You will have a better chance of drinking more water and staying hydrated! Water has so many benefits to your health.
- Meet with a dietitian! If you have any nutritional concerns or questions, EMU has an awesome dietitian and on campus you can direct those questions to. You can also contact your healthcare provider and set up an appointment with one of their dietitians.
These are only a few ideas, but if you are looking for more, a lot of these ideas came from this awesome article, https://www.foodsmart.com/blog/16-delicious-ways-celebrate-national-nutrition-month, so be sure to check it out!
